The annual Kuskokwim 300 Reading Challenge began Friday, January 12th and will end on Monday, February 26th, 2024. Shortly after the K-300 Sled Dog Race began, Mikelnguut Elitnaurviat K-300 Reading Race started to promote reading at home and to celebrate the great history of dog mushing when our mail was delivered by dog team in the early 1900’s.
READING CHALLENGE RULES
-
All M.E. students may join the challenge.
-
The entire race has 10 checkpoints.
-
Reach each checkpoint by reading 10 books or 10 chapters.
-
Teachers will track student progress at school and students will keep track of their own
progress on a personal K300 Reading Race map at home. The map will be sent home
the day the race begins.
-
Books can be read to or by the student.
-
Parents and teachers verify when books/chapters are read by recording the titles on a
special checkpoint sheet. Teachers will send out blank checkpoint sheets with January
and February learning materials.
-
Checkpoint sheets are to be signed and returned to the student’s teacher as they are
completed.
Parents, please monitor what the children read. While the race is based on the number of books read and not the time spent reading, we encourage that students read at a recreational reading level. Reading to your child is quite beneficial and will also be counted.
