Welcome to the Jackson Zoo!

Bethel's Mikelnguut Elitnaurviat students had the chance to learn about animals from around the world at the "Jackson Zoo" yesterday. Mr. Kingsella's first grade classroom was transformed into an interactive exhibit as visiting classes learned about animals and their habitats, and took home coloring sheets about their favorite animals.
Mr. Kingsella said that this project-based learning experience was largely driven by the students. They did the research, made clay representations of their animals, constructed habitats, looked for library books about their animals, made posters, decided how to run the zoo (each visitor was given a unique hand-drawn ticket!), and willingly volunteered details about their animals to all their visitors. Some students even named their animals! A shoutout to Rose the Polar Bear!
It was a great experience for the students, both the zookeepers and the visiting classes. Even adults learned something new! We especially loved seeing the student's pride in what they created!
